Your Mind

Photobucket

OK it’s time to put on your thinking caps. Today’s topic has to do with what I feel like is the most often overlooked piece of equipment you have, your mind. You know; the gray matter that occupies the space between your ears, and it applies to us all, whether you are in LE, the military, Private Security or just a normal guy (or girl) with a concealed carry permit (especially the latter of the two, because face it boys and girls you probably haven’t had any formal exposure to this topic at all). You regularly practice everything else, dry firing, trigger control, breathing, sight picture, shot placement, all the basics (at least we hope you are practicing these fundamentals, if not,  you’re only shortchanging yourself because the bad guys may be). You go to the range and throw rounds down range, you think about cover and concealment, low light situations, tactical movement and other scenarios, all in the name of preparing yourself for the day that you may have to engage some gun toting moron in defense of yourself or someone else. You’re prepared physically right? But how about emotionally? How about mentally?  Are you ready to deal with the aftermath? When was the last time you actually thought about what was going to happen when it’s all over and then the adrenaline rush wears off.  Are you mentally prepared for what happens next? Have you thought about it beforehand? What are your friends going to say? Are you going to talk about it? Who are you going to talk about with? How’s it going to affect your wife (or husband), your kids? These are things that need to be taken into serious consideration, now, because I promise you, if this ever happens it’s going to be the most life changing event you ever experience, and if you’re not mentally and emotionally prepared it could very well destroy you! But fear not. There are ways you can begin to prepare yourself for this eventuality. Really it’s very simple, and it all begins the same way you have always learned before, quite simply put; you read about it. Then you think about it and begin to prepare yourself for it. I’m going to mention a few books here, by people who have faced it, lived through it, dealt with it, studied about it and then wrote about it. My friends, Lt. Col. David Grossman and Loren Christensen, have written two books and along with Michael J. Asken, Ph.D., a third, that I have come to consider the trilogy of mental and emotional preparedness on how to deal with a subject that just cannot be stressed strongly enough. On Killing, On Combat and the Warrior Mindset are absolute must reads for anyone who has made the conscious choice to carry a firearm in the line of duty or in self defense. You owe it to yourself and to your loved ones. You’ve made the decision to carry a firearm and you’ve trained yourself to do so proficiently, now do yourself a favor and finish off by training the most important weapon you have. Your Mind. Contact lwcbooks.com to request more info on how to obtain the books mentioned in this article, hurry and you may be able to get a signed copy.

Training Instructors

 Photobucket

The third week of April USSA hosted its first NRA Civilian Instructor Training Seminar for many of our local adjunct Instructor staff.  Though it was open to the public, 90% of the participants were Experienced Shooters and Incumbent Instructors on our staff looking to expand their teaching skills and explore some new horizons in the civilian market.

My name is Dan Graeber, I am certified as a Senior Training Counselor by the NRA Education and Training Division.  NRA Training Counselors certify Instructor's (see the note below for more details). This particular certification course was for Basic Pistol Instructors.  I thoroughly enjoy teaching these sorts of classes. Good Instructor candidates make this job both exciting and FUN!!!  I will assure you that the guys at USSA were a blast to work with. Everyone was very knowledgeable and patient.

The U.S. Small Arms Training School has now tripled the staff's ability to teach civilian NRA courses.  They are excited and ready to work with students.  They can teach the "First Steps" course that is designed to help those that are just getting into the sport of shooting and would like some additional training.  They can also teach a full Basic Pistol course which is designed as a more intense course for those who want more detail and an overview of the world of Pistols.

This group is now also well enabled to navigate through the NRA Winchester Marksmanship Qualification program.  This is a COOL program that can help anyone get on target and scoring mush quicker than you may think.  In fact, in a recent blog done by Mike D., you may recall that he had a couple of students working through that program...

I expect that within a month or so, we will be scheduling more basic courses throughout the metroplex.

I have certified over 200 Instructors in the last few years and I have to say that I appreciate our USSA staff and their willingness to learn good teaching techniques, but ALSO to be willing to share their very extensive knowledge and skill with the public.  What a rich group we have to help all with the skill.

NOTE: As a Training Counselor - our goal is to identify experienced shooters that are good communicators and help to develop their skill in the training arts.  We certify instructors in all of the civilian shooting disciplines of the NRA (13 different disciplines).  They include all of the basic shooting skills in Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun, Muzzle Loading, Personal protection, Draw from a holster, Reloading, & Refuse to be a Victim.  If you are that person who has experience and wants to share it, we want to talk to YOU!

In early April 2010, Waxahachie, Texas residents-Jonathan and his mother Melissa successfully completed the NRA First Steps Orientation Pistol Course hosted by the U.S. Small Arms Training School.

As Director of the school I took a personal interest in this young man. Jonathan relayed to me that he is a high school freshman and a member of the Ellis County Sheriff's Department - Law Enforcement Explorer Program. He continued to tell me that his goal for this year, is to win the National Explorer Shooting Competition in July 2010.

With his determination and his mothers support, they continued on in training and both successfully completed the NRA's Basic Pistol Course.

Going the extra mile, they participated in the NRA / Winchester Handgun Qualification Program.

Jonathan achieved the skill level of Pro Marksman, Marksman, and Marksman First Class.
His Mother Melissa is not far behind. She has achieved Pro Marksman skill level and is close to obtaining the Marksman level.

During the last four weeks, firing hundreds of rounds, Jonathan experimented with the Smith & Wessen Model M&P-9C, 9mm, Beretta Model 92F, 9mm, and chose the Glock Model 17, 9mm to compete with.

With patience, practice, and the right attitude, Jonathan is on his way to challenge is goal against the hundreds of competitors across the country.

You may also see Jonathan in the future on the U.S. Small Arms Pistol Team Trail.

U.S. Customs wants to ban your Pocket Knife!

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools LLC, in support with The American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI) opposes U.S. Customs' attempt to classify assisted-opening knives and all one-hand-opening knives as switchblades.

U.S. Customs proposes to bypass Congress and expand the switchblade definition to include all knives that open with one hand. These include multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, as well as assisted-openers.

Statistics to consider about the knife industry and the possible effects of this ruling:

    * U.S. Sporting Knife Industry has a $5.9 Billion Economic Impact on U.S. Economy
    * 3,881 direct U.S. Employees at 61 Companies
    * 35.6 Million Households Own Pocket Knives; 24.8 Million Own Hunting Knives
    * Assisted-opening and one-hand-opening knives are 80 % of All Knives Sold
    * 30-40 Million Public Safety, Non-Issue Military, Construction, Recreational Users

The majority of Americans who carry and use one-hand-openers every day need them for their jobs. They use them to save lives as well as for scores of recreational activities.

If U.S. Customs succeeds, it could lead to effectively banning all folding knives from interstate commerce.

We're asking you to register your opposition to the U.S. Customs' plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives.

Arrests of U.S. Border Agents on the rise

As enforcement has gotten tougher, cartels look to bribes to get drugs into the U.S.

By Rick Jervis
USA Today

WASHINGTON — A rising number of U.S. border enforcement officers are being arrested on corruption charges as Mexican drug cartels look to bribes as a way to get around tougher enforcement, border officials say.

Investigators arrested 21 U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers on corruption charges in the fiscal year that ended last September 2008.

Since 2004, 84 officers have been arrested and 62 were convicted, says James Tomsheck, assistant commissioner for internal affairs at CBP, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. That number represents a small fraction of the more than 52,000 people employed by the agency, which enforces U.S. law along the 2,000-mile border with Mexico.

Still, the trend is alarming, Tomsheck says. "We're deeply concerned. The numbers are disturbing."

Homeland Security plans for Violence on US border

Tighter gun control and stronger law enforcement in Southwestern states were recommended Thursday by lawmakers concerned about drug violence in Mexico possibly spilling across the border.

The escalating violence — which has killed thousands, mostly south of the border — has been blamed on Mexican drug cartels which one Homeland Security official described as the biggest organized crime threat facing the United States.

NYC Lawsuit Against America's Firearms Manufacturers Denied By U.S. Supreme Court

Fairfax, Va. - On Monday, March 9, the U.S. Supreme Court denied consideration of New York City and Washington, D.C. lawsuits, New York v. Beretta and Lawson v. Beretta, respectively, that tried to hold American gun manufacturers responsible for the acts of criminals.

In 2000, New York City, Washington, D.C. and several individual plaintiffs sued gun manufacturers, based on the idea that although they manufactured a legal product, forcing them to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees just to prove their innocence in court would drive them into bankruptcy. In addition to being based on a bogus legal theory, these lawsuits endangered American armed forces and law enforcement. During congressional debate over the PLCAA, the Department of Defense agreed with the NRA that bankrupting U.S. gun makers and making us dependent on foreign countries like France, Russia or China for small arms is a threat to America's domestic and international security.

"We are pleased that the courts have recognized the misguided intent of these lawsuits," concluded Cox. " America's law-abiding firearms manufacturers must be protected from reckless suits that have no legal merit."
